Throttle Free Play

 

SAFETY FIRST: Protective gloves and eyewear are recommended at this point.

Inspection

 

Make sure the throttle opens and returns smoothly. Check the throttle cable adjustment by gently rotating the throttle grip back and forth until resistance is felt.

 

Throttle cable free play 0.5 - 1.0 mm (0.02 - 0.04 in)

 

Start the engine and let it warm up. Turn the handlebars from side to side, if the engine rpm changes either the free play is too small or the throttle cables are not routed properly. Check and correct the cause.

Adjustment

 

Loosen the throttle cable locknut with a 10 mm wrench. Turn the adjuster all the way in. turn the adjuster until the throttle free play is within specification. Hold the adjuster in place and tighten the locknut securely.

 

If the throttle cable cannot be adjusted to specification it will need to be replaced.

 

Lubrication

 

The throttle cable should move smoothly through its travel.

 

Use a cable lube tool to lubricate the throttle cable with an appropriate aerosol lube.

Lubricate the throttle cable guides in the right handlebar switch housing with grease. See the Handlebars topic for more information.
